Can code reformatting when rendering domains (especially C++ and C) be disabled?

When outputting HTML for the C++ and C domains – and probably others but I mostly care about these two – Sphinx reformats the code. For example, this rst:

.. cpp:function:: void foo(const std::string& text)

.. c:function:: void bar(const char* text)

is rendered in the HTML as

void foo(const std::string &text)
void bar(const char *text)

Note the changed position of & and *. This is undesirable because it violates the style guide of the documented projects. The code in the HTML should be formatted as written in the rst. Does Sphinx have a way to achieve that?

I’ll appreciate any information you can give me about the topic, because I couldn’t find anything in the Sphinx docs, in the GitHub issues or on Stackoverflow,
