See spacetelescope/hstcal#71 for example usage. This is more of reducing maintenance burden going forward, so no terribly urgent. Follow up of #156. Address part of spacetelescope/ci_watson#8.

Should wait till #168 is resolved.

p.s. Might be a good idea to address spacetelescope/ci_watson#9 and spacetelescope/ci_watson#10 concurrently.
