  1. Install Eclipse with sudo snap install --classic eclipse.
  2. Start Eclipse as a normal user
  3. Click Help > Search for Updates
  4. Select all updates, confirm, accept license agreements, and attempt to install
  5. Error occurs: Backup of file /snap/eclipse/48/readme/readme_eclipse.html failed.

Running Eclipse as root does not help. The error occurs.

Have removed and reinstalled Eclipse to no avail. Please advise. Thank you.

I have got the same problem. The following details are shown:
An error occurred while uninstalling
session context was:(profile=epp.package.java, phase=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.engine.phases.Uninstall, operand=[R]org.eclipse.rcp_root 4.14.0.v20191210-0610 --> null, action=org.eclipse.equinox.internal.p2.touchpoint.natives.actions.CleanupzipAction).
Backup of file /snap/eclipse/48/readme/readme_eclipse.html failed.
File that was copied to backup could not be deleted: /snap/eclipse/48/readme/readme_eclipse.html

It seems that epp.package.java is to blame. By deselecting the package the update succeeded, however a number of fixes were not applied.

You cannot update parts of the snap using the Eclipse updater. You can install plugins and update stuff that lands in your home directory, but the content of the snap cannot be modified.
