The Security Force Monitor Research Handbook describes an apporoach to investigating the organisational structure, command personnel, geographical footprint of security and defense forces. It is used to establish connections between specific units and persons, and documented human rights abuses, and support the pursuit of accountabilty for those abuses.

The updates in this version include:

  • Introduction of "claims" and graphs as a basic data modelling concept
  • Overhaul of core models for units, persons, incidents, and locations
  • Introduction of training model
  • Improved documentation of timeline construction

This version of the Security Force Monitor Research Handbook is a comprehensive guide to the models, encoding rules and concepts that SFM used to create data in the period 2019-2023. Specific updates from v.2.0.0 to this version are:

  • sample data entry sheets and full fieldset listing;
  • expanded Location model and accompanying documentation;
  • possibility for internationalisation enabled by changes to project structure and integration with the Transifex service; and,
  • various small fixes.

This version will be superceded in 2023 by v.3.0.

Overhaul of Security Force Monitor's Research Handbook:

  • rationalisation of human-readable labels for fields, which are now more consistent and descriptive
  • development of consistent naming scheme for fields as used in spreadsheets and other data collection formats
  • development of shortcodes for use in coding and analysis tasks
  • inclusion of new format: "persons_extra"
