When creating a new site for most craft fields the content is duplicated between sites as default - so all the existing content is exactly the same in the new site. Then you can go through and change/update the fields that you need to whilst leaving the others. For some reason the link field just defaults to 'no-link' thus removing every single link throughout the site...
Seeing as you would normally want the links to remain and just change the link text for the language etc the expected behaviour would be for the field to maintain the content from the original site unless explicitly changed...i think!?

Have tested a bit further. It looks like if you have links set to entries in a seperate section you need to make sure that you enable that section first for the new language/site and let the entries fully re-save before then enabling the section that contains the link fields...If you enable both sections at the same time then the link fields end up empty.
