In my tests I'm using the Canada (Central) Region that the link seems to recommend. Although, I'm still not clear if that necessarily means we're FIPPA compliant.

update Looks to me like Canvas hosts their data on that same server so maybe? 🤔

New discoveries with AWS

We need a driver on Tableau Server if we want it to work with AWS: https://www.tableau.com/support/drivers

  • see error message below in red
  • Are there any concerns with adding this driver to our instance?

Seems like when it's on Tableau Server, the user who accesses the workbook is asked to authenticate with Athena (see screenshot below)

  • I'm not sure if this just needs to happen once or every time
  • If it's every time, I think we will need to create a user group on AWS with credentials that can be shared with everyone who needs access (or individual credentials for each person is also possible with no account necessary - i believe)
  • If we do go with the above option, user filters may no longer be necessary as everyone will basically need to authenticate with the data source
    • CORRECTION we may still need them so people have filtered "views" ie. can only see their courses

I think if it's setup properly, the owner of the data authenticates and shares the authentication with the server. So as long as the user permissions on Tableau are setup to view data - they bypass the athena authentication. If it's the same as how you would connect to an sql database.
