Backreferences in source and/or condition

I'm feeling a severe need for these! I may be being dense, but I can't figure out a way of specifying, for instance, a sequence of two identical characters: being able to use C$1 in the source would be very handy. (I've been trying to write a rule to eliminate geminates.)
