Class argument for ScalaCollectionSerializer#read

I was wondering if you can give an example on how to invoke ScalaCollectionSerializer#read. Seems like:
read(kryo: Kryo, input: Input, typ: Class[Traversable[_]])
only accepts classes that are Traversable, not any subclasses/implementations of it. Also, even if I override the read method with my own, readReferenceIds's size is 0, which causes an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException exception.
