Date: 06/15/2018

HSPEXP+2.0 is a major upgrade to HSPEXP+1.32. The following list of features added and bugs fixed for the version 2.0 includes all added features and fixed bugs in the earlier beta versions. The installer is now signed and it tells the users that the installer has been produced by RESPEC. This will reduce the security warnings.

Features:

  1. Multi-Simulation Manager capability was added that can be used to conduct sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis, and scenario analysis.
  2. Regan plots were updated to generate daily max and min DO for all the reaches, if hourly DO data is available in WDM or binary files.
  3. The HSPEXP+ Manual is now available as a pdf file for ease of printing.
  4. Reports for additional constituents including Heat, DO, BOD-Labile are also generated.
  5. Reach Budget reports for N and P constituents are also generated.
  6. Some reports are now generated so that they can be easily filtered in spreadsheet program.
  7. Monthly land loading reports are also generated.
  8. Box-whisker plots of constituent loading by land use and box-whisker plots of monthly constituent loadings are also produced.
  9. If GQUAL is simulated, then land loading and reach budget reports for all the GQUAL constituents are available.
  10. If the observed data in WQX format has been filtered using BASINS, that file can be read by HSPEXP+ to generated automated graphs.

Bugs fixed:

  1. If observed flow data is of shorter length than the simulated data then expert statistics and annual graphs were not working properly. That issue has been fixed.
  2. If MASS-LINK block did not have proper connection for constituents, then HSPEXP+ gave error and quit. Now a more useful error is presented.
  3. While making automated graphs, warnings have been moved to the log file.
  4. In some cases, if the GENER operation didn't exist, HSPEXP+ crashed. Fixed.
  5. Some reports were having issues with analysis date. Fixed.
  6. If input PS and model timestep were hourly, point sources were not being calculated. Fixed
  7. Multiple small bugs fixed. In general, the warning messages do not stop HSPEXP+ calculations. The warning messages are added in the log file.

Please keep on submitting issues and feature requests using Github Issues feature.

RESPEC releases the beta version of HSPEXP+1.40. This release comes with a capability to conduct multiple simulations if the parameter values are provided in a separate specification file. This capability can be used for sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo simulations, Generalized Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE), testing scenarios etc.

Please go through the warnings and the usage instructions before downloading and using this capability. Feel free to use Github's issue tracker if you have any issues. Do mention the software and the version number in the subject line.

Thanks and happy modeling.

Warnings:

  1. This is a beta version, and it may not work on your computer.
  2. The results have not been tested thoroughly, and it is advised that the users check their result independently.
  3. This option has not been tested for cases where the number of simulations is in the thousands; we are not sure how HSPEXP+ will behave in those cases.
  4. Since this is a beta version, all intermediate UCI files are saved; users are advised to check if the correct parameters were changed.
  5. HSPEXP+1.40beta may not be able to change all the parameters and may give undecipherable errors.
  6. HSPEXP+1.40beta may not be able to change the parameters by land use and operation numbers.
  7. HSPEXP+1.40beta does not actively show a counter of the number of simulations complete.
  8. All the features offered in this version may change, and may not be available in the officially released versions.

Usage:

  1. When a user selects the option for Sensitivity/Uncertainty Analysis for the first time with an HSPF model, HSPEXP+1.40beta generates a sensitivity specification file.
  2. The sensitivity specification file is a comma separated (*.csv) file with the list of DSNs that are analyzed during each simulation, and the list of parameters that are varied for each simulation.
  3. The default sensitivity specification file contains the first three WDM DSNs from the EXT TARGETS block for output analysis.
  4. The default sensitivity specification file contains LZSN and INFILT as the parameters for analysis.
  5. HSPEXP+1.40 beta also copies the DSN in a new WDM file for each simulation for later analysis.

Pre-release

USGS Surface Water Toolbox (SW Toolbox) is a stand-alone Windows application for analysis of hydrologic data. RESPEC Inc developed the software under contract from USGS and EPA. SW Toolbox is built on top of open-source MapWindow GIS software. It streamlines hydrologic data retrieval, processing, management, analysis, and visualization. It is also a full function GIS mapping software for rendering geospatial data.

The main feature of SW Toolbox is the Integrated Design Flow tool that combines the SWSTAT and DFLOW programs. It allows the user to carry out both analysis in one working session.

This software is officially hosted at USGS SW Toolbox site. This release is for internal evaluation only, it is not officially released yet by USGS.
