UI & UX Refinements

  • When you log in you should be sent to your Dashboard with ONE EXCEPTION [IDR-144]
    • When you log in for the FIRST time you should be sent to the "Upload a File" page
  • Alternative link styles should be kept consistent throughout the site [IDR-145]
    • Buttons as links are preferred (.btn-link)
    • Having a red :active and/or :hover state would be a nice touch
    • Text inbetween buttons like "or" should always be there or never be there (DBH votes for never)
  • Multi-field input needs a little TLC [IDR-146]
    • Return capture does not work as expected once there is more than one field
      • Given that the focus is on the new field when you press enter it should trigger the "add" action
      • Given that the focus is an existing, repeating field when you press enter it should trigger the "remove" action
    • After the "add" action the focus should change back to the blank field
    • The "add" button should be separated from the first field -- there should be a 2em (or so) gap between them
    • The "add" button should have a .disabled class until a valid entry is present
    • The "add" button should not function until a valid entry is present -- in this case not null
    • The input field should have placeholder text with an example of the desired input formatting
    • There needs to be an audit of the "additional fields" -- examine why each one is there and find an example for the placeholder text
      • Should "publisher" be there?
      • What do we mean by "citation"; shouldn't that field be bigger?
  • Senior Thesis submission form need some UX refinements [IDR-147]
    • Keep the required information on the left and optional content on the right
      • An abstract should be a required field
      • A DOI is optional therefore it should be on the right. Swap it with access controls which are required.
    • Upload a file is not required, but the field goes away on "edit" -- is this what we want?
      • Is there a way to indicate "This file is my actual thesis" ?
      • If the file upload box is supposed to go away there should be a note and a link to where you can manage Senior Thesis files
    • The "I agree" check box to the legal termes should be more prominent
    • On "create" you should be sent back to the dashboard
    • On "update" you should be sent back to the Senior Thesis record view
    • Indicating required fields needs additional clarity
      • The * that indicates a required field is not sufficiently prominent (make it bigger, maybe change the color)
      • Make the value of the tool tip display as "Required" (or something even more helpful) rather than "required"
      • Position the star such that the label text is aligned with the start of the corresponding field
      • Remove the underline: .control-label abbr {border-bottom:none;}
    • "Update Senior thesis" and "Update and Add Related Files..." both do the same thing
  • Senior Thesis show view needs UX and UI refinements [IDR-148]
    • Remove the "Back to Dashboard" button
    • The file listing needs some additional clarity
      • Split attributes and file listing into different rows
      • Inset the file listing into the Senior Thesis context -- from "span12" to "span10 offset1"
      • The filename should like to the edit view of the file
      • The "Visibility" of a file should not link to the edit view but should have a tooltip or modal with an explanation of the visibility options
      • Move the "Attach a File" Action from the Senior Thesis form actions to the bottom of the file listing -- like in a <tfoot>
    • The title text should have a link to the edit form
    • Text rendering for abstracts needs to be improved
      • The abstract should either be split into two columns or made a single column with significant padding (optimal column width is something around 2 alphabets long)
      • Line breaks are not honored -- maybe the best thing is to switch to a markdown parser with a tag whitelist
    • Add and action that links to the "show" view for the Senior Thesis -- something like "View as a member of the Public" (although that isn't quite right)
  • Generic File show view needs some UX refinements [IDR-149]
    • It should show what collections contain this file (like the Senior Thesis)
    • It should have a link to view/download the file contents
    • It should have an action to "View as a member of the Public" or similar (like the Senior Thesis)
  • Generic File versioning is confusing [IDR-150]
    • Generic File versioning should be a separate action, including it in the edit menu creates confusion (i.e. when I update the version and update a field value, which one takes precedence?)
    • Be able to view each version before selecting it (The current process is select a previous version, update the Generic File, and go somewhere (where?) to download the file)
    • A select box may not be appropriate -- radio button list?
  • All non-category pages (e.g. Dashboard, Upload a File, Search) should have a breadcrumb below the action bar [IDR-151]
    • Our application assumes that each Generic File will belong to one Senior Thesis -- use that senior thesis as the breadcrumb value
  • Search Box padding doesn't work right in Firefox 20 for Mac (possibly a border-box issue) [IDR-152]
  • The "current URL" value in the help dialog box is not being populated properly [IDR-153]
