Maynard is a desktop environment designed for the Raspberry Pi (but not limited to it) running on Wayland.
Maynard is far for complete, but it's already starting to take a nice shape. Its goals are being functional, light and pretty.
Check a video of Maynard running on a PC: YouTube/webm video file; and of Maynard running on a Pi: YouTube/mp4 video file.
Why a new desktop environment?
Existing desktops are too heavy for a Raspberry Pi (KDE and Gnome) or they don't work on Wayland (LXDE).
What is Wayland?
Wayland is a protocol for a compositor to talk to its clients as well as a C library implementation of that protocol. Wayland is intended as a simpler replacement for X, easier to develop and maintain. See the Wayland website.
What is Weston?
Weston is the reference implementation of a Wayland compositor. The Weston compositor is a minimal and fast compositor and is suitable for many embedded and mobile use cases.
Do you need EGL for smooth animations?
No, Maynard doesn't use EGL.
Can I run Maynard on other hardware?
Sure, see the instructions on how to run it on a normal computer for instance.
Why this name?
To fit in the Wayland/Weston theme. See Wayland, MA, Weston, MA, and Maynard, MA.
Who are the authors of Maynard?
See the AUTHORS file.
Who sponsored Maynard?
Mainly the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Collabora.
