As you might be able to see, there is quite the backlog of image description submissions here. Thank you everyone who has submitted one, they're a great help.
Unfortunately, actually merging these into the project is a frustratingly manual and time-consuming process at present, which includes ensuring that descriptions meet quality expectations for good alternate text, ensuring the description is actually describing the image, spellchecking and other copyediting, merging the description into the source data file, and updating the attributions accordingly.
This process can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes per submission, which makes tackling the bulky backlog like this a significant time sink. Between the day job, other commitments, and recent/lingering long covid, it's not something I find myself too able to make time for.
So I'm asking for some help.
If you're keen on writing and editing, take a look through the backlog and suggest improvements where you see space for them.
If you're comfortable with GitHub and code, try opening pull requests to merge the descriptions instead.
If you're more programming-oriented, contributing some sort of automation that creates ready-to-merge PRs out of GitHub issues would be incredibly cool. (I've tried writing one myself but I'm just not great at that kinda thing.)
Thanks for reading, hopefully that makes sense. Please don't make hesitate to continue submitting image descriptions! They're essential for accessibility... just as soon as we can merge 'em.
