Slow sdist(?) generation

In the current cffi 1.0 branch of cryptography (pyca/cryptography#1986) we're seeing extremely slow sdist generation when running pip install . (on the order of 20-30 seconds). @dstufft asked me to file this as an issue 😀

Thats funky. Could you post instructions to reproduce? Sorry if that seems obvious, but I like to not assume things :)

Sorry about the absurd delay on this -- The issue is unrelated to the version. In reality it's a function of the size (and number of files) present within the .tox directory. @dstufft tells me that he thinks pip copies everything into a temp dir, which would explain the slowness since it's copying almost a gigabyte of data (spread across thousands of files) in this case.
