Only run build hook once

Hi!

My repo looks something like this:

config
javascript
gradio <the python package>

I defined a build script in config and added the following line to pyproject.toml

[tool.hatch.build.hooks.custom]
path = "config/copy_frontend.py"

Running python -m build -w works perfectly. However, running python -m build fails because when hatch tries to build the wheel from the source distribution, it can't find the script file anymore

OSError: Build script does not exist: config/copy_frontend.py

How can I fix this?

You need to do two things:

1. Change [tool.hatch.build.hooks.custom] to [tool.hatch.build.targets.wheel.hooks.custom]
2. Include that script in the source distribution

This was helpful and I believe my build is now correct, but perhaps someone could verify it... There doesn't seem to be almost any documentation or examples on custom builds...

Using targets.sdist.hooks.custom to build NPM frontend for my Python web service. The built frontend is shipped with the Python sdist so that Node is not needed for installation or at runtime. The script is here: https://git.zi.fi/Vasanko/cista-storage/src/branch/main/scripts/build-frontend.py
