Why does hatchling add -py2 to the wheel name?

Using setuptools as build backend I'm getting this wheel name:

mvtec_halcon-23050.0.0-py3-none-any.whl

With hatchling I get:

mvtec_halcon-23050.0.0-py2.py3-none-any.whl

Why does it add -py2 to the the name. The project is a pure python package configured with python_requires = ">=3.8". It will not work with Python 2. I'm no expert on Python wheels, but this seems undesirable.

I'm probably missing some details here, so I don't know if this helps, but after I added this to my pyproject.toml, the py2 component was gone from the wheel filename:

[project]
requires-python = ">=3.8"

Oh I migrated python_requires = ">=3.8" from the setup.py. Am I correct in assuming that all properties have to use - instead of _?
