hatch's mkdocs setup for deploying gh-pages somehow doesn't delete existing files?

Looking at the code here: https://github.com/pypa/hatch/blob/master/.github/workflows/docs-release.yml#L83-L92 and looking at the action documentation for peaceiris/actions-gh-pages -- it has keep_files: false as a default, yet somehow the current actions workflow isn't deleting the existing files when pushing? Is this a coincidence or does hatch do something to make sure it's not deleted?

Now I see, the git archive is creating an archive of the updated gh-pages branch, rather than just the generated docs alone from that run. This is what I was missing.
