How to specify "no additional features" in a matrix?

If I have optional features defined in my pyproject.toml file:

[project.optional-dependencies]
foo = [
    ...
]
bar = [
    ...
]

How can I specify an environment matrix that has no features selected for testing?

[[tool.hatch.envs.hatch-test.matrix]]
python = ["3.12", "3.11", "3.10", "3.9"]
features = ["foo", "bar", "???"]     
#                          ^^^ what should I put here to test the base package without any features? 

I thought about creating a third feature goo with either empty optional dependencies or a dummy, meaningless dependency that would have no effect. I've read the docs fairly closely and searched the discussions and issues, but perhaps I missed something.

That by itself doesn't set features, that section just defines variables that generate environments: https://hatch.pypa.io/latest/config/environment/advanced/#matrix

You can use overrides to actually set features: https://hatch.pypa.io/latest/config/environment/advanced/#matrix-variable-overrides

Try hatch env show hatch-test then hatch env show hatch-test.py3.9-7.4-responses. If you see the proper dependencies then I think the issue is that when you run hatch test it only chooses the first compatible environment listed in your configuration so by default it's probably running hatch-test.py3.9-7.4-none. You have to use filtering options to select more environments or do --all.

I'm going to revert to the 1.9-style specification of a test matrix in regular environments for now. I'll come back and create an issue and dig into the code once I have my release done.
