How to represent files as zarr archives after the explicit index refactor?

So I have lots of FVCOM files that fall under the constraint of #2233. I would like these to convert to zarr archives, and in a way that they can be opened by xarray (in the future, after completion of #6293). There are two options, I assume:

• rename the conflicting dimension or variable name to something else. This works already today but I'd like to keep the naming conventions as they are if possible
• assemble the zarr store manually, add _ARRAY_DIMENSIONS myself.

Or is this kind of file simply not amenable to zarr stores - or will xarray somehow try to support this?
