Re-structure Leisure category #34
Comments
I can see the edit button in the wiki, yes, so I assume others will too. However, I'm very short on time for the next few weeks, so I won't be able to provide much input on this, sorry. |
@Hufkratzer maybe you are also interested. I'm really not happy with the current "Leisure, Sport & Shopping" parent category and like to re-structure it into two top categories:
What do you think? Any better naming ideas? |
You can try this here: https://www.openstreetbrowser.org/#repo=openstreetbrowser/main~leisure-restruct |
Or just "Leisure and Sport", as the Outdoor idea somewhat overlaps Tourism and Leisure... well Outdoor overlaps everything. :P We need to avoid long titles since they will be translated. |
+1
Leisure includes Sport -> "Leisure" is sufficient Not sure if "Children amenities" fits into "Leisure"; playgrounds are ok, but shops and toilets? Maybe it can be moved to "Special". Perhaps therefore move "Tourism" to here? So perhaps:
|
We could call the first category (Gastro, Shops, ...) "Amenities"? |
In German it would be "Gewerbe", not sure what it is in English, perhaps "Business"? |
I think I will stick with:
I will also drop the 'Outdoor Activities' layer, and move these sub-categories directly to 'Leisure and Sport'. I might split the 'Children Amenities'. Any objections? |
My personal opinion as newcomer. Ignore as you see fit: Naming is hard and taxonomies harder. Thinking of folks who would find a great deal of value from OpenStreetBrowser, if only they put a little time and effort into the finding... My general recommendation would be to lean toward (always error on) very broad names at the top level. One click should reveal a category of interest. A second click deeper should show results, or at least a promise of results. Folks are willing to lift every rock to find something but are less likely to lift the rocks they find under the rocks. If not, a super broad group like "activities", I think; walking, (road) cycling, mountain biking (cycling), paddling and even climbing are all forms of transportation and folks would quickly find them there. I tried to think about the other groups mentioned, but my mind wants a moment to consider all of the current categories and potential future categories. 🤔 |
I think that there are too many and too diverse map features in the leisure category. I think, it's rather useless. I would like to split it into several sub-categories. I would like to have your input (@Cybereric @IgorEliezer @severinmenard @debyos @waldyrious and others who are interested) on this.
On this page, I listed the most common values and where (beside the current 'leisure' category) they are being queried right now (bold). Feel free to make suggestions in the "category" column, to which sub-categories you would add them to (and how to name them). You do have edit rights in the wiki, don't you?
