Fixing complicated packages with the D compiler as an example
First off, packaging a compiler is a tedious job. Mostly because it takes a long time to build and test! Trick is to do something else at the same time ;). The actual steps are not that lengthy once you have the build under control.
The main trick is to have a fast turn around time when debugging failing tests.
Note D’s ldc2 compiler now uses the gold linker by default. This has caused me some headaches because it does not honour LIBRARY_PATH. The workaround is to set
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LIBRARY_PATH
in the build system. This can be done with something like
(setenv "LD_LIBRARY_PATH" (getenv "LIBRARY_PATH"))
only problem is that the path won’t get recognized at runtime. This is why I am defaulting to ld for now.
Also it may be wise with gold to default to the –no-allow-shlib-undefined switch, so it complains when it can’t find a shared library at link time.
Build the package with -K option.
./pre-inst-env guix build --no-grafts --no-substitutes ldc -K
Note you can see the output of the build with
cd /tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-2 cat build/Testing/Temporary/LastTest.log
To have a quick scan
egrep -i fail\|error Testing/Temporary/LastTest.log
which for example rendered
FAIL release64 std.datetime.timezone core.exception.AssertError@std/datetime/timezone.d(566): assertNotThrown failed: TimeException was thrown: File /Africa/Abidjan does not exist. Test Failed.
After a build fail, change into the created dir and git init, e.g.
cd /tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-2/ldc-$ver
git init
git add .
git commit -a -m init
#END_SRC
So when you fix some code you can generate a patch/diff with git.
: git diff
set the environment in a pure fashion
env -i /bin/bash --login --noprofile --norc
cd /tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-2/
. environment-variables
cd ldc-$ver
rm -rf CMakeFiles CMakeCache.txt
cmake .
make clean
make -j 24
make test -j 24
alternatively you may want to use a build container (no network by default and note you need to pull in all build dependencies)
~/.config/guix/current/bin/guix environment -C guix --ad-hoc ldc clang llvm unzip gdb ncurses vim git make cmake which less tzdata binutils
cd ldc-$ver
source ./environment-variables
rm -rf CMakeFiles CMakeCache.txt
cmake .
make clean
make -j 24
alternatively, you may use the pre-inst-env from a prebuilt guix directory which may be in sync with your new packages.
Note with ldc-1.14 I had to touch two files:
touch /tmp/guix-build-ldc-1.14.0.drv-8/ldc-1.14.0/.git/packed-refs touch /tmp/guix-build-ldc-1.14.0.drv-8/ldc-1.14.0/CMakeFiles/git-data/head-ref
which makes sure cmake . passes.
and I had to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to the LLVM lib dir. Somehow that was not the same one used by the build system.
To run the tests
cmake .
to run one
ctest -R dmd-testsuite-debug
to make one test set (note this is not in the build directory, but in the ldc source)
make -j 24 phobos2-test-runner-debug
To run one test
./runtime/phobos2-test-runner-debug std.datetime.timezone
To run it in gdb
gdb --args ./runtime/phobos2-test-runner-debug std.datetime.timezone
once in there you can set a bp with, for example
(gdb) l /tmp/guix-build-ldc-1.11.0.drv-0/ldc-1.11.0/runtime/phobos/std/datetime/timezone.d:2154 (gdb) b 2152 Breakpoint 1 at 0x2747a08: file timezone.d, line 2152. (gdb) r (gdb) p name $1 = "America/Los_Angeles" (gdb) p tzDatabaseDir $2 = "/usr/share/zoneinfo/"
and run the tests fully without networking (if you are not in guix environment)
/tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-2/ldc-$ver# /usr/bin/unshare -n runtime/phobos2-test-runner-debug
note the originals are still in
../build/runtime/phobos2-test-runner-debug build-druntime-test-runner-debug
If your environment is correct you should see
set|grep HOME HOME=/homeless-shelter
to disable network access run as root
/usr/bin/unshare -n ../build/runtime/phobos2-test-runner-debug
Which throws an error
shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory /gnu/store/kpxi8h3669afr9r1bgvaf9ij3y4wdyyn-bash-minimal-4.4.12/bin/sh: /tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-0/std.process temporary file ebe1260e-300b-460c-adf1-880a8459b3dd: No such file or directory ****** FAIL release64 std.process core.exception.AssertError@std/process.d(1196): assertThrown failed: No ProcessException was thrown.
edit the file (disable the test), rebuild and test. A git diff for this one looks like
diff --git a/runtime/phobos/std/process.d b/runtime/phobos/std/process.d

To run tests with a shared library:
cd /tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-2/build/runtime env LD_LIBRARY_PATH=../lib/ /usr/bin/unshare -n ./druntime-test-runner-shared
In the final step
./pre-inst-env guix environment guix --pure -- ./pre-inst-env guix build ldc@$ver -K
or a more complete
rm -rf /tmp/guix-build-ldc-*.drv-* ; time ./pre-inst-env guix environment guix --pure -- ./pre-inst-env guix build ldc --no-substitutes -K
Note you may want to remove the keep dir every time you rerun. In my version the environment contained a path reference to /tmp/guix-build-ldc-$ver.drv-0 even though I was in a different drv-2 tree.
The lit tests can be run individually with
cd tests ./runlit.py -v codegen/align.d
or completely with
./runlit.py -v .
To speed up the Guix build + testing you can inject something like
(replace 'check
(lambda* (#:key inputs outputs #:allow-other-keys)
(setenv "SHELL" (which "sh"))
(setenv "CC" (string-append (assoc-ref inputs "gcc") "/bin/gcc"))
(with-directory-excursion "tests"
(zero? (system* "make"))
(zero? (system* "./runlit.py" "-v" ".")))
(zero? (system* "make" "phobos2-test-runner-debug" "-j" (number->string (parallel-job-count))))
(system* "../build/runtime/phobos2-test-runner-debug")
))
(add-after 'check 'break (lambda () (#f)))
the actual patch looks like
;; some tests call into gdb binary which needs SHELL and CC set (setenv "SHELL" (which "sh")) (setenv "CC" (string-append (assoc-ref inputs "gcc") "/bin/gcc")) - (invoke "make" "test" "-j" (number->string (parallel-job-count)))))))) + (with-directory-excursion "tests" + (zero?
