  • The ECEMF mapping contains SE|Heat|+|Oil, but that is never calculated in remind2. This is the case since this repo was started.
  • We either need to remove it from the template or add it to the remind2.

There are two points here:

  • Firstly, this variable used to reported in REMIND and was removed some time a few years ago. Is there anybody that felt responsible for this change?

From a first look, the model currently does not have any associated tech that could be associated with direct heat or combined heat and power from petroleum products, so this is most probably considered zero by definition. It would be nice to somebody involved in that to chime in.

  • Secondly, as it is possible in petro-states, even today, to have some smaller contribution of petroleum in power and maybe also in combined heat and power (chp) production, investigating this could be a potential task for someone that wants to have more experience with REMIND and get more familiar with it, or maybe to a newcomer that aim in the future to understand and work more closely with REMIND:

Here are the steps I would recommend to be followed in this case:

  1. Check the IEA data to see if there is any heat or chp flow that uses oil directly.
  2. Check where do we map the values if they exist.

2.1 If they do not exist, write a comment to the reporting library to reflect that, so the information is easily accessible in the future.

2.2. If the values exists and are relevant to specific countries, but we do not map them anywhere:

  • Create a tech in REMIND to consider this in the model
  • Create a new mapping for this IEA data
  • Adapt the reporting library to report this new tech values after a REMIND run.

2.3. If the values exists, but we map them somewhere else not related with petroleum products:

  • check if this is a reasonable assumption, in which case I would write a comment in the reporting library explaining where these values are accounted for.
  • if it is not a so reasonable assumption, change the current tech mapping from IEA, and follow the steps described in 2.2

for the record: I removed it from the piamInterfaces mapping templates.
