Sign of acceleration is a pure sensor manufacturer convention.
Detect if the car reach a speed that would be strange in reverse and take that direction as positive.

Basic version in 570a473

Can be improved analyzing statistically the direction of all motion and finding the main direction.
Also the threshold must be raised because 21 km/h can be reached in reverse.
