Ability to disable a device in the lightpath, e.g. to check what would happen if we pretend that the device is removed. This would be useful for devices that randomly start behaving poorly in terms of states, etc.

I'm not sure on this. Seems like a hack to make up for inconsistent controls in EPICS controls.

It's similar to an MPS override. "Suppose this device wasn't here: how far would the beam go?"
