While sending message with attachments (total size is near 4202820 bytes) I get these errors:

The error is in the first few lines MySQL server has gone away

You should review your memory usage, it may be that your server has insufficient memory or some other memory setting is insufficient.

Are you able to have a look at the OS logs (/var/log) to find any other indications of what has occurred?

I have found the problem in mysql log file:

Aborted connection 13 to db: 'unconnected' user: 'postal' host: 'localhost' (Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet' bytes)

Have increased this variable from 4 to 32 MB at the moment. Works fine!

Leaving this comment in case its useful for other Postal users.

The max_allowed_packet configuration param can be changed in the [mysqld] section in /etc/mysql/my.cnf. I changes ours from 16MB to 64MB.

vim /etc/mysql/my.cnf

[mysqld]
# ...
max_allowed_packet      = 64M

systemctl restart mysql

root@Ubuntu-1804-bionic-64-minimal ~ # mysql
...
MariaDB [(none)]> SHOW VARIABLES LIKE 'max_allowed_packet';
