I've spent 7 years working on Micro and the precursor to that Go Micro. One thing I found incredibly difficult was open source sustainability. The sponsorship model doesn't work. Not for the 80% at least. You can't live off it and if you find a way like I did, it's not a great living and most of your time is spent on support. It also didn't reflect my ambitions to build a new platform, a single place to build and consume services.
M3O is my next act. We're taking Micro and hosting it as a platform. But rather than offering a PaaS to people, we're building Micro Services ourselves and offering them as APIs.
A while back I raised $2m in seed funding to make it happen and build a team who could execute on that vision. We continue to leverage Micro for everything and build everything as open source but I think sustaining it means needing to do something much bigger with it.
I personally feel like Micro can become "Android for Cloud" and I'm going to do everything in my power to make that happen.
