1. Go to the main page of your repository on GitHub.
2. Cick on the Settings tab.
3. In the left sidebar, click on Collaborators.
4. Click on the Add collaborator button.
5. Enter the username of the person you want to add as a collaborator.
6. Select the Can push permission level.
7. Click on the Add collaborator button.

this comment is outdated now, but THANK YOU, because of you I payed more attention to the buttons of the UI and found a new solution:

1. Go to the main page of your repository on GitHub.
2. Click on the Settings tab.
3. In the left sidebar, click on Collaborators.
4. Click on the "Add people" button.
5. Enter the username of the person you want to add as a collaborator.
6. Click on the "Add to this repository" button.
7. In "Manage Access" find the collaborator that you just added before, and click on the icon with two squares that is near the text "Pending Invite" (that will copy a link of an invitation for the collaborator).
8. Send the link to your friend and wait until he accepts the invitation.

there is no Collaborator option in my settings. I am trying to get my school recognised.

@corlene-cyber That's because you missed Step One. You should look for that option in the repository's settings and not in your User's settings.
