Description of issue

During brew upgrade I noticed the following line:

==> Installing dependencies for gnu-getopt: libgit2, z3, swig, llvm, rust and ruby

Is this list correct or it's a bug? It seems strange that getopt would need llvm and rust as dependencies.

I've tried using brew deps --tree gnu-getopt to check its dependencies but it doesn't output anything... Does anybody know why?

Building gnu-getopt requires asciidoctor. The dependency chain is asciidoctor -> ruby -> rust -> llvm.

You can see that from the output of brew deps --tree --include-build gnu-getopt. By default, build dependencies are not listed by brew deps.

If you don't want to build all those from source, you may try to edit the gnu-getopt formula to skip building the manpages and remove the asciidoctor dependency. (I believe asciidoctor is only needed for that.) To do that:

export HOMEBREW_NO_INSTALL_FROM_API=1
brew tap --force homebrew/core
brew edit gnu-getopt  # do your edits
brew install gnu-getopt
