Can we do something simple like google custom search as per okfnlabs.org and integrate into top navbar

Or suggesting the algolia search, very powerful and fast. They have a jekyll plugin + support community projects, open source and nonprofit projects by offering index records and operation queries. https://github.com/algolia/algoliasearch-jekyll

@cecilaki the one issue is we deploy on github pages so we can't use custom plugins ...
