  • only send new or changed messages instead of whole chat
  • use Visibility API to reduce traffic from inactive tabs
  • use service workers to reduce traffic when multiple tabs are open
  • change refresh rate based on the number of recent messages

Just an idea: is it possible not to delete the "shout." subdomain so it could be used as mobile interface?

It won’t be deleted, only deprecated (it won’t be updated any more when it breaks). Chat should however get a mobile friendly version.
