Change Log

[next] tbd

There is talk that Mastodon might get Group support, so maybe this tool will be obsolete in the not too distant future. We'll see about that. tootgroup.py will be supported as long as there is a need for it - For Mastodon and/or other Fediverse services.

[1.5] 2024-10-12

ADDED

  • Compatibility with GoToSocial (tested) and possibly other Fediverse services (untested).
  • OAuth support for registering the tootgroup.py application with servers (needed for GoToSocial but also works with other services)

CHANGED

  • There are no more retries while registering the application with username/password. Instead an OAuth fallback is invoked. If this also fails, you have to retry manually.

FIXED

[1.4.3] 2023-12-18

CHANGED

  • Modernised build setup and switched from setup.py to pyproject.toml (still using setuptools as its backend) Also provide wheel distribution.

[1.4.2] 2023-12-16

CHANGED

  • Switched from appdirs to platformdirs dependency. While the former is not officially deprecated, maintainance seems to have stopped while the platformdirs fork is in active development.

[1.4.1] 2022-06-23

CHANGED

  • Friendica 2022.06 broke compatibility in a sublte way. To make this more robust, a second repost trigger has been added. From now on *@mention ist supported alongside the existing !@mention method. Friendica only supports the new style whereas Mastodon and Pleromoa support both!

[1.4] 2022-05-31

ADDED

  • Group members can now also post from Friendica.

[1.3] 2021-05-16

ADDED

  • Pleroma is now officially supported. It mostly worked before, but it will be tested alongside Mastodon from now on.

FIXED

[1.2] 2021-03-28

ADDED

  • Configurable toot visibility: private, unlisted or public. Can be selected at initial setup. Existing installs will remain unchanged (public)

CHANGED

  • In-place config update without user interaction possible for existing setups.
  • Move parts of the source to a separate tootgroup_tools module

[1.1] 2020-04-08

CHANGED

  • Only create a toot from a DM if it begins with the @mention. Reply with an explanatory message to inform users why no toot was triggered in cases where the DM did not begin with the @mention.

[1.0] 2019-04-26

ADDED

[0.8] 2019-02-11

ADDED

  • Exception Handling for file and network operations where necessary

[0.7] 2019-01-03

ADDED

  • Commandline flag to catch up with the current timeline without posting anything
  • Commandline flag to dry-run without updating or posting anything - useful for testing

CHANGED

  • The "-u" "--user" commandline flag has been changed to "-g" "--group" for the sake of consistency with what it acutally does.
  • Media files are now cached using Python's tempfile function
  • Configuration is now stored in an OS specific location by default but local files will still override it. This way upgrades just continue to work like before and it is possible to keep the configuration next to the script file if preferred. This introduces the additional "appdirs" module dependency!

UPGRADE NOTES - Manual intervention required

  • Change the "-u" "--user" flag in your scripts and/or crontab entries to "-g" or "--group"
  • Install the new "appdir" module dependency either manually, via pip or your system's packet manager.

[0.6] 2018-11-08

ADDED

  • Pagination. Fetching notifications can give paged results if there are too many to return at once. tootgroup.py can now take care of that and also limit the maximum fetched notifications count.

CHANGED

  • Further improved shared mode. No more difference necessary between it and exclusive account access by tootgroup.py Notification IDs are now used to determine which ones are new and have to be considered for posting.

[0.5.2] 2018-10-31

FIXED

  • Media upload was broken due to change in Mastodon's media.url

[0.5.1] 2018-10-12

FIXED

  • Retoots of direct messages do no longer show HTML-escaped special characters

[0.5] 2018-10-12

ADDED

  • Read commandline flags with agparser
  • Added --user flag to configure and use multiple accounts
  • When sharing access to a group, tootgroup.py does no longer look for the last time it wrote anything to the group to determine what has happened since. In that case it persists timestamps and checks when the last run has happened to search for any new toots or direct messages to process. This is needed because any toots from other sources would cause tootgroup.py to miss notifications that happened between it and tootgroup's last run. This feature writes the config file to the disk every thime tootgroup.py is run and for that reason it is only activated if a shared account requires it.

[0.4.1] 2018-10-02

FIXED

  • Retoots of direct messages do now keep their linebreaks
  • Removed hardcoded @groupname

[0.4] 2018-08-29

ADDED

  • Read and persist configuration with configparser
  • Detect problems with configuration and get user input for corrections
  • First-run/Install feature. Detect missing configuration and ask user for all necessary setup details.

[0.3] 2018-08-28

CHANGED

  • Retoot mode is no longer triggered by using a specific hastag, but by preceding the mention with an Exclamation Mark like "!@mastodon"
  • Code refactoring and cleanup. tootgroup.py behaves now more like a real commandline application.

[0.2] - 2018-08-24

Added

  • Configurable retoot mode Public mentions from group members are now boosted if they include a trigger hashtag. That way they will point to the originating user. Direct messages are sent as new toots just like before, but the originating user will not be shown in that case. This is NOT a privacy feature since the group admin will still see who created a specific message. However, it can be handy for some use cases. Both options can be enabled or disabled during setup.

[0.1] - 2018-08-19

Initial commit

  • Basic proof of concept.
  • Manual installation and setup required
  • Create new toots from direct messages of group members only
