Admin:

  • Coordinate with APAM admin upon her return (June 6th)
  • Figure out how stipend will be delivered through this
  • Register for LEAP Slack Tier 2
  • Get LEAP Slack and computing resources access
  • Register for Climatematch
  • $300 Climatematch registration fee reimbursement from Columbia
  • Apply for GO-BGC
  • Switch over Github account from Rice to Columbia email

TODO:

Potential directions for work:

  • Learn about eddies, transport and ocean dynamics in context of reduced models (QG, SQG, etc.)
  • Start developing parameterizations in these simple models, to understand what the goal of parameterization is and what “missing processes” they are used to describe.
    • This will also help in understanding the process of parameterization implementation in models and evaluation of how the models have been improved (or changed) in response.
  • Think about how to expand out to real world, and more complex models.
    • Evaluate what real world and realistic models show
    • Parameterizations in realistic climate models

Technical skills to develop:

  • Data analysis and visualization in Python (or other language of choice with support)
  • Some understanding of numerics/computational science
  • Some understanding of statistics and using metrics to understand the randomness and chaos.
  • Some basic software development skills (maybe very important to stay organized)

SUMMER/FALL GOAL: get Hugo’s paper to work in QG model

  • Develop a ML based passive scalar transport parameterization for a 2 layer QG model.
