The extension is partially ignored for newsreader URLs:

  1. for news articles that still exist, the article is displayed but delivered with a 410 error
  2. for news articles that are hidden or deleted, the 404 page is displayed

Probably the routing of the news has a higher priority.
There may be a solution at URL Rewrite, as far as I know it also works for news.

Did you actually specify in your .htaccess that the article in question should redirect to a 410?

It works for normal pages.
