line vs sock for aircraft data <- ORNL is using line spatial representation for their aircraft campaign data. Bruce Wilson ORNL DAAC manager mentioned to Amanda that their GranuleMeta V3 tool is very versatile and modular and it should be easy to add additional file types. Amanda’s recollection on “sock” vs “line”: main driver was to provide an accurate spatial representation of where data are located. I believe a basing it on flight lines is less precise, as it doesn reflect if data were actually captured during the flight. Amanda would be willing to reach out to Mark Schwab to see if he has different memory.
We could/should evaluate if this value is still important by understanding user impact if we move to “line” and dont reproduce a “sock” option as LVIS is the only data set still using the sock. If DUCk team comes to the conclusion that we would recommend line we have to involve LVIS team.
