"Automatically check for updates" should check for updates, nothing more.
Actual behaviour
I expect a checkbox that says "check" to be informative with no installation side-effect. However, "check for updates" here involves downloading the update and forcing an upgrade when the application restarts.
One of:
Keep "check" and perhaps add logic to optionally download and install.
Change the wording so that it says what it is going to do.
Provide a way to cancel the forced upgrade.
There are valid reasons to not want the update immediately, please allow me to retain control while remaining automatically-informed. Thank you.

One thing to keep in mind is that:
a) IIRC when there is an update available you can be asked to skip it
b) the install part is done automatically only on Windows ATM, not on Mac or Linux.
So if a wording change does happen it might have to be only for Windows.
a) A tray notification appeared saying that the update had been downloaded, restart the app to install it. In the (not yet updated) app itself, the only button available was "restart and update".
