At least one part of this problem was due to not closing the video before opening a new one.
The second problem is probably related to how I do seeking. The gui needs to reset the frame# back to zero for the new movie. Still needs investigation.

it looks like it only works if you open a file to frame 1, don't advance frames, and then open another file. as soon as you move to the next frame or other frames of the movie, and then try to open another file, the error shows up again.
