I think it would be beneficial to include a STEP file along with the wrl. I often export 3D models of boards from KiCAD to import into other CAD packages for mechanical design but they don't play nice with the wrl file.

After a quick Google, it looks like there is an extension available for SketchUp that can do it. I don't currently have SketchUp installed on my machine, but might play with it later to see if I can get a STEP exported.
