1) Small-cap and closely held international stocks are often very illiquid and, thus, are typically excluded from indices; 2) Crossing is the process by which an investment manager matches his own clients' buy/sell orders without a broker. Index reconstitution refers to upward (downward) price pressure on securities that are included (deleted) from an index; 3) Float adjustments have a large effect on constituent weights and frequently revised adjustments can drive up transaction costs via rebalancing; 4) Objective and clearly stated rules for index construction enable users to predict what will be in the benchmark and trade more effectively
