- 5 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon aniseed
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 tablspoons milk
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon crisco shortening
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- Extra flour
- Extra crisco
- Patterned rolling pin
- Wax paper
In a bowl, mix flour and baking powder.
Melt the shortening in the microwave.
In a separatae bowl, using an electric mixer, beat egg yolks until thick and light. Pour in sugar slowly while continuing to beat. Pour in flour and baking powder mix 1/2 a cup at a time. Mix in milk aniseed salt and melted shortening.
Grease baking sheets with crisco.
Sprinkle flour on board or clean surface. Lightly coat patterned rolling pin with flour. Take a handful of dough and roll out to 1/4 inch thick. Roll with the patterned roller, pressing down hard to imprint the picture. Cut out the rectangular cookies and place them on the greased baking sheets.
Chill in the refrigerator overnight to set the pictures.
The next morning, preheat the oven to 375° F. Put the cookies in the oven and then immediately turn down to 300°. Bake for 12 minutes. Cool on wire racks. Store cooled cookies in ceramic crocks separated by wax paper.
