MT7601u as AP driver

Found this that purports to let the MT7601 give an AP mode: https://github.com/Anthony96922/mt7601u-ap

The list here says the chipset does not support it, but this github suggests otherwise.

I just compiled it, currently testing now, so far no luck. Anyone get this to work?

That seems to a specific driver for AP mode. You probably need to blacklist the in kernel one.

@bjlockie is right. I think you need to blacklist the driver in the kernel first.

This is interesting. I would have to look at the code to see exactly what we have.

I should probably reword the part in the list about the chipset not supporting AP mode. The driver does not support AP mode and I ran across some of the reasons at one point but would have to find it again.

I used to maintain this driver. I don't work on this driver anymore due to how extremely bloated and messy it is. It is long past due that the official Linux mt7601u driver has AP support.

Wow, I always thought Mediatek had good drivers. :-)

If you look at the maintainers list, the person listed for this driver is not a known Mediatek employee or associate so it is not clear to me what the story is.

I agree. The chip would be much better with good AP mode support.
