Implementation plan
To feed geographic data into the system we intend to use OpenStreetMap data file types (i.e. osm.pbf, osm.bz2). In addition to that SHP (ESRI compatible shape files) can be converted to OSM(OpenStreetMap) file types and feed into the system. For this, we would like to check the availability of above file formats with following map features,
Feature | Description |
---|---|
Schools | Zonal, provincial and national schools |
Roads | Grade E, A, B and C / Railroads |
Government offices and public services | Zonal and provincial education offices / Police stations / Train stations |
Utilities | Water supply and drainage board regional offices / Water supply stations and lines / Electricity board substations |
We have observed that Survey Department website currently hosts map tools and their original source files may satisfy above requirements. Original source file (i.e. OSM or SHP) used in 1:50,000 topo map (in survey.gov.lk map shop section link - https://www.survey.gov.lk/nsdi/gis/index_grid_50k.php) The most recent Open Street Map (OSM) data file for Sri Lanka is available at http://download.geofabrik.de/asia/sri-lanka.html
