For discussion:

@kilemensi suggested using PEP585 and PEP604 in new code.
My concern is a confusing mish-mash of old and new conventions.

Looking around for a tool to do conversions, I found:
https://github.com/asottile/pyupgrade
Can be run as a pre-commit hook
