Tips on resizing images for OCR tasks

I'm writing the similar app with the ability to recognize handwritten formulas + blocks of text. Can someone point me in a direction of how to resize images for OCR. The goal is to uppload 2480 x 3508 (A4) files and receive LaTeX file + optional pdf. I understand that upscaling images to that size is absurd. The usual image width is 256px, to which size is optimal to scale and is it even necessary.
