If you are running a test and the formatter is run, then it changes what is shown in the "Run" tab. Away from the test result and instead shows the output of spotless:apply. This is rarely interesting to see and you want to stay in the test context.

This is true. The question is more about how IntelliJ processes external tool tasks. The same thing happens when you run the apply command manually.
During development, I provided a function to prevent the tool window from opening if it’s not already open, for convenience. I believe there’s also the option to open a new tab if the window is already open.
