I read something on reddit that pypi are making 2FA mandatory by the end of 2023:

We'll probably need to update the CI that runs when we make a release to accommodate this, on quick inspection I think the route to go is the "trusted publishers".

I recently re-enabled the pypi publish on release in gaplint:
