The symbols aren't recognized on my computer. I have a new m1, I look at the universal-ctgas repo says homebrew for mac. Is that the issue?

I think so. this package highly relies on universal-ctags. and the mac version in my repo is downloaded through homebrew, seems not work well in M1 chip.
I'm not sure if it is possible to build it manually on M1, but if you have free time, could you help to check it.
