In 1898, as Brooklyn was consolidated into the City of New York and became the Borough of Brooklyn, the tenure of the library's first director, Mary E. Craigie, came to a close. The development of the library system continued over time, with construction occurring as funds were raised. Building of the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza began in 1912, and was not completed until 1941. Between 1901 and 1923, however, much progress was made thanks to the generosity of the great philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, who donated $1.6 million toward the development of 21 branch libraries.

Today, the BPL system is the fifth largest library system in the nation, existing independently alongside the New York Public Library (serving the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island) and the Queens Borough Public Library. Consisting of 58 branches, plus an outstanding business library in Brooklyn Heights, the BPL system stands testament to the dedication of many generations of public servants.

Founded in 1848, by an act of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts, the Boston Public Library (BPL) was the first large free municipal library in the United States.

Today, the Boston Public Library system includes a Central Library, twenty-four branches, a map center, a business library, and a website filled with digital content. Last year, 3.7 million people visited the Boston Public Library system, many in pursuit of research material, others looking for an afternoon's reading or the use of the computer or to attend a class, still others for the magnificent and unique art and architecture of many library locations. There were 7.8 million visits to the library's website and 3.7 million books and audiovisual items borrowed or downloaded.

In 1857, some of Sacramento’s leading citizens, including Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins, and C. P. Huntington, formed the Sacramento Library Association. In 1872, the Library Association purchased a downtown Sacramento lot and erected and furnished a new library building. Later, the Association turned the building over to the City of Sacramento with the requirement that it be a free library.

More than 150 years later, the Sacramento Public Library is still serving the residents of the greater Sacramento area. Although time and trends have changed the delivery of library services over the last century and a half, the Library has never changed its commitment to providing those services with excellence and professionalism. Today, the Library remains the heart of the community, meeting the needs of its diverse population and responding to ever-changing interests.
