Feature description

1. When I go to Info screen of a movie and then 'Similar' from the left section and click on one of the cast, it displays me his/her timeline on the right side. I think the items in Timeline are not clickable? can they be made so? Not sure but I think it might be lot of work to make them clickable

2. In the same screen when I click on the cast name again, it opens a side menu from the right with two options - Credits & Wikipedia. Clicking on Wikipedia does nothing, is it a known issue? The Credits option works though.

Why is this feature needed? Please justify and explain.

Do you have script.wikipedia installed? (available on my repo or official via program addons).

Timeline can be made clickable and it was originally but I found it made navigation difficult. I found most of the time I was wanting a quick way to scroll to get an overview of the movies rather than opening them. Plus because there's no way to reset a container position without focusing it, it would also mean the position of the timeline got left in a weird spot sometimes and so when you go to a new person and the container loaded new items it would be scrolled over to the end etc.

So current approach is a compromise - use timeline to get a quick overview, or click into the person to get more details and explore further.

@jurialmunkey thanks mate, one observation: In Info screen of movie and then 'Similar' from the left section, when I long press on a cast name, it opens up a context menu from right side which has couple of entries like Browse lists, Trakt options etc. - are these functional yet? Since clicking on 'Browse lists' takes me to Cast in Movies, Cast in TV Shows etc. But nothing happens on clicking 'Cast in Movies', it brings me back to Similar screen. Same thing with Trakt Options.

Context menu items which open windows to browse won't work because having a dialog open blocks the underlying window from changing. This is a kodi thing - it won't work in any skin.

I can't stop kodi from allowing you to open the context menu even though practically everything in it will be broken inside the info dialog.

That's a hub. There's one for movies, tv, music, pvr as well as four custom ones.

If you've got library content, it should be setup by default as long as you choose one of the layout styles in the wizard with a spotlight and submenu (i.e. Categories or Compound layout style) but you can also set it up manually:

1. Go to Skin Settings > Menus > Customise item X to choose the side item you'll link to the hub.

2. Choose Type=Movies and Action=None to set the item to the hub. Disable Widgets only and Combine widget stack to get the layout in the screenshot. Spotlight is top half of the screen, categories is everything underneath

3. Setup your categories buttons to point to whatever locations you want, then Choose submenu to set a submenu for them. You can also see here that you can set individual Spotlights per category item, or add additional Widgets per category.

4. Select Dynamic list to autofill the submenu with items, Make sure to choose the same location you chose for the category.

5. Example: You can see here that I've set the category to open the Genres part of the library and then I've set the submenu to point to the Genres node in my library. More options appear underneath once a submenu is set to allow you to sort it etc.

6. Finally, if you scroll down, you can choose Use as widget to have the hub automatically display a widget underneath of whichever item in the submenu is focused. More options then appear to allow you to sort the widget.

Hi @jurialmunkey, just to piggyback on the 'Similar' section and clicking on Person's name to open up the side menu with 'Credits' and 'Wikipedia'.
Is it possible
a) to have side menu with separate items for movie credits and tv credits?
or
b) to have four rows of credits: movie cast, tv cast, movie crew, tv crew?

I guess option a) will require two API hits, while option b) will be compute intensive.

The need for separate credits is because the combined credits clutter the list with 'Self' and/or guest characters, particularly from talk shows.

P.S.: Not creating a feature issue, as the current system is perfectly fine, just a minor inconvenience to me.

I agree with you regarding timeline giving an overview, and I think similar idea is applicable to OSD also, because while watching a video, we only need an overview of the cast info. So, timeline and OSD can remain consistent.

I remember AH2 skin had separate movie and tv cast info in OSD, and though it was convenient, I thought it was too cumbersome, and a bit difficult to navigate. The current approach is much better, and besides we can click on the cast to get all details from Wikipedia.

Okay I've split Movies/TV shows starring credits into separate lists

I've left the crew list as combined because I found while I was testing it that most actors don't crew in enough movies and shows to make it worth splitting them apart.

So there's three lists now - Movies, TVShows, and Production - that seems to make the most sense in practice.

Trying to understand if I am following it correctly :) so in Info screen of a movie and then 'Similar' from the left section, when I press on a cast name, it opens the right sidebar with Credits and Wikipedia, if I click on Credits it is showing me two rows - Starring & Production. Should I be getting Movies and TVShows instead of Starring?
If that is not the correct navigation then kindly share a screen record for me to follow.

One observation though - the Movies and TVShows against a cast is not appearing in descending order of year, they are all random, any way you can fix that please?

It's sorted by popularity. It's intentional, with the idea being that it brings the person's best known movies/shows to the front; whilst timeline can be used to get an overview in terms of release history.

On a different note - there is a section in skin settings where you can set autoscoll interval, the minimum one being 5 secs, can you please provide 2 or 3 seconds as minimum option there? I tend to read the plot fast so the 5 secs delay keeps me waiting :)

That doesn't change textbox speed. That's the widget autoscroll speed.

Can't really have a setting for textbox scroll speed because Kodi needs hardcoded values.

On second thought, can the user be provided with the option for sorting like Sort by popularity, Year (Desc), Year (Asc), Rating etc. ? I understand Timeline gives the overview of release history but the items in timeline are not clickable as we know so if I sort by release history in Cast section, I can click into the movie/show and play them.

This is related to the search functionality. From the Movies search result if I click on a movie it displays the Play, Trailer, Details etc. on the left sidebar which is expected however those doesn't appear when I click on the TV Shows search result. I even tried long click to open context menu to browse from there, no luck. Can you please check at your end? I am using the latest version of the skin and TMDbHelper.

ohh! Just tried with 'The Marvels' - same issue, did you check with one of your local files or while streaming via add-on like Fen/Seren? I am doing the later. I suppose there is no specific setting to make the thumbnails appear?

Local files. It relies on Kodi being able to generate the thumbnails for the chapter markers

@jurialmunkey I don't seem to find a way to exit from Kodi..earlier when I pressed the left directional key of my shield remote it used to open a side bar on the right (which still happens) and then on one more press it used to open an adjacent mini side bar with exit option, this doesn't happen any more. In settings I have the replace close button with menu option disabled, not sure how to get the exit option back?

The side tab has been removed. You can customise the rest of the options menu in the widget config screen. Just click the menu button at the bottom left and it will give you options.

The new defaults put the quit button directly in the options list but obviously I don't want to reset configs on anyone, so if you had a config from before you'll need to (re)add it manually.

You can change it in the side menu customisation screen. Simple toggle which item is default.

Ps you know you can start a new discussion thread for new topics? You don't need to keep using the same discussion thread for completely unrelated topics 😉

Also just note that the default is tied to the position in the list rather than the specific item.

If you move items around, it won't follow the item, it will be whatever item is now at that position.

Also means any disabled items above will throw the position off -- e.g. if item 2 is set as default but item 1 is disabled, then Item 3 ends up in the 2nd position when built so that's what gets focused.
