We should use a consistent unix tutorial each year, building on what we learned the previous year.
Some things we learned this year:
Students generally struggle with VI or any terminal-based text editor. We should avoid teaching this, allowing them to use a graphical text editor instead.
The tutorial should be a file students can work through, clearly laid out, independent of what the teacher is doing.
There should be clear units to work through.
The teacher should wait for everyone to reach the end of the current unit before moving on.
Students are very unwilling to ask for help. We need a way to make it easy for them to get help.
There needs to be a way to measure whether people are stuck, or have finished. Ideally automated, but could be a physical solution.
