Students are spending a lot of time changing windows, trying to see the instructions in a PDF and then change back to RStudio to run the commands.

Once setup with a split-window they were able to work without changing windows.

The setup that worked well was:

left: RStudio with the environment side made very small (but not hidden completely)
right: the PDF with the index hidden
