It might be worth noting in the documentation for the above function that noise(x) = noise(-x)?
I didn't realise this and it has just cost me an hour to find out why the images I had applied noise to were always symmetrical about the (-1, -1) to (1, 1) diagonal axis. This officially qualifies me as 'slow'!
